3 Ways to Make Your New Year's Eve Drinks Healthier

You break open a bottle of champagne at a party or cozying up with hot cups of whiskey on the sofa, it is important to be aware of the health effects of what you drink, experts say.
Toasters New Year when it comes to counting calories, champagne is actually healthier to have all the time not to exceed alcoholic beverages, said Ruth says Frechman, spokesman of the American Dietetic Association.

"Champagne is sparkling wine just 100 calories per 5 ounces," Frechman, a registered dietitian based in Los Angeles said. "Not a bad move."

Here are three tips to make your drinking party as healthy as possible:

1. Stop after one or two drinks.

The best way to be healthy when you drink the new year is not to consume more than a moderate amount of alcohol, Frechman said.

"A drink for women and two drinks for men - those that moderate amounts," he said.

Research has shown that moderate alcohol consumption may be beneficial for heart health. A study published in November in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology found that alcohol helps block the signals of molecules that can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries.

But although alcohol has its advantages, too much of it endangered. A study published in September in the journal BMC Research Notes found that people over 60 have trouble walking without tripping after only two glasses. In addition, excess alcohol can lead to blood poisoning.

2. Remember that alcohol has calories.

"Not really thinking about alcohol as have calories, but it, and has many" Frechman said. Also fat directly metabolized said.

Alcohol contains about 7 calories per gram, only a little less fat, which has 9 calories per gram, said.

And when alcohol mixers such as juice or soda is added, you can double the number of calories in your drink.

"Eating a hamburger is like drinking a screwdriver with juice and alcohol," said Frechman. "One hundred and fifty fruit juice calories, 100 come from alcohol."

In general, spirits such as vodka, whiskey and rum has about 100 calories per shot, Frechman said.

Four ounces (118 milliliters) of champagne has 96 calories, according to Mayo Clinic.

At the other end of the calorie scale, a eight ounces (237 milliliters) of hot buttered rum has 292 calories and alcoholic eggnog from the same party has 391 calories, according to Mayo Clinic.

And if it is cream or cream liqueur is added to your coffee, cream mixers always pack more calories than juice or liquor, Frechman said.

"If you make an Irish coffee is poured into the cream, which is just 100 calories cream" which contains about 20 calories per tablespoon, said. "And that's saturated fat - not the right kind of fat."

Irish cream liqueur has 407 calories per 4 ounces, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Margaritas can run the gamut from 200 to 800 calories, depending on what expenses are included in the vinegar, Frechman said. And a martini can have 400 to 500 calories.

3. Consider using low-calorie mixers on your favorite drinks.

Although it may be difficult to replace low calorie options in beverages if you are in a bar, it is easy to change the ingredients if you are mixing drinks at home, Frechman said.

"If you look at calories, then you might have a small amount of wine, then fill it with soda, so it's like a wine cooler" suggested Frechman. "It would give volume, but not a lot of calories."

And using soda instead of regular soda as a mixer, said.

Drinking a rum and coke diet cola using, for example, "that really makes a difference," said Frechman. "This saves between 100 and 200 calories - there are potential savings of 400 calories just two drinks."

Juice, while they have calories, can it bring health benefits that sodas are not, he added. Try to mix the orange juice instead of a soft drink with liqueur get some vitamin C, Frechman said. You can also add cranberry juice diet and lime juice for a little vodka cosmo low in calories.

Pass: For New Year's Eve healthy in moderation, noted that alcohol has calories, and consider replacing low-calorie mixers on your favorite drinks.
